Shipton Quiz Night
About 70 people filled Comrade's Hall, Broadwindsor on Friday 27th January for the Shipton R C Quiz Night. Members of the public joined horse lovers to battle it out in the general knowledge quiz which included rounds on famous faces and music used in TV advertising. An "Equine Twist" round, requiring no knowledge of horses, comprised questions and answers which made reference to the world of the horse. Attendees now know, if they didn't already, that in betting terms £25 is known as a pony and "a horse of a different colour" is featured in the film "The Wizard of Oz"! Wine, cheese and biscuits were consumed during the break and a good profit was made for the club, to help us to continue holding events for the enjoyment of all members.

Children's Show 26/8/11
SRC held their children's show this year on Friday August 26th 2011 at Potwell farm and as usual the weather was not on our side - as the thunder rumbled around the Dorset hillsides the first classes started around 10ish. It was a very relaxed atmosphere and as the heavens opened all the riders and their ponies came in out of the rain and we moved the tea/coffee and cakes from the tack room to the arena and used straw bales for tables - this avoided the mums and dads from ending up with pneumonia! Katie Gatehouse did a sterling job keeping everyone fed and watered!
Kimmy from Hillview riding school judged the proper showing and Linda's sister Alison judged the fun showing. Pip Bailey judged the fancy dress and helped judge the SJ classes with Ruth Baskett. Our thanks go to them and our host we are very grateful.
Junior and senior members arrived to help and made the whole show run smoothly.
We had 31 riders from 3 to 16 years old/members and non members/new and old faces and everyone enjoyed themselves.
Our photographer was Charles Whitton and his photos and brilliant video can be seen on www.charleswhittonphotography.com please do have a look the photos are not of just the prize giving but the whole day and children having fun with their ponies.

Broadwindsor Dressage
For once the sun shone for the dressage at Broadwinsor. We had 21 entries, some riders never
having been before and others being familiar faces.

Gill Longhurst kindly agreed to judge for us and with help from
some committee members the day went smoothly. All the riders that took part seemed to enjoy themselves and most
stayed for coffee and cakes afterwards which is always nice as it’s a chance to chat with everyone and get to
know one another.

We had the added bonus of Zoe Gladwin being present with her camera and she took some amazing
pictures of the day, a few you will see below. If you would like more information on Zoe and her pictures please
contact her by ringing 007714400684.

We will be organising another dressage at Broadwinsor very soon so keep looking
at the calendar for future dates. Look forward to seeing you there!
Kingston Maurwood Adult Camp
On the 2 nd of August three of us from Shipton Riding club went to Kingston Maurward, to spend three days at the
adult camp which had been organised by the BHS. We arrived on probably the hottest morning of this summer and
having put our horses in the temporary stables that had been put up we went into the indoor school to be greeted
by Gilly Wheeler who was the main instructor and organiser for this event. Having been briefed we then all tacked
up and had our first lesson, some of us doing flatwork in the indoor school others having a jumping lesson outside.

By the end of our first day we were looking forward to spending a relaxed evening sitting round with a glass of
wine getting to know the other riders (all of them being really friendly).

By the second day we had settled into our various lessons, some people choosing to do a Trec day starting off
with the obstacle part and ending up with riding round the near by forest, one or two getting lost on the way but
all returning home eventually!

Linda Mandy and myself really enjoyed ourselves, it was such a lovely friendly and relaxed atmosphere and the
instructors Gilly and Tamzin were so calm and friendly they made all the lessons so fun and informative.
We all feel we would like to do it again next year despite the fact we were camping and the last night was probably
the wettest (and very windy) of the summer and we woke to a flooded tent! It still didn’t prevent us from
having a great time.
SRC HAVE A GO ODE 2011
SRC held their second have a go ODE at Linnet Farm Rampisham on Sunday July 17th by kind permission of Mrs D & Lucy Pinney who once again were the perfect hosts – thank you.
As so often happens the English weather was not so helpful instead of being nice and sunny the day started misty damp and windy but this did not seem to deter just under 60 riders who turned up to ‘Have a go’. The sun finally made an appearance at lunchtime and stayed with us for the rest of the day.

Some riders were coming for a second year but most were new faces. We clashed this year with Chard Show and an area pony club dressage competition. This may or may not have affected our entries but we were happy that we recovered our costs and made a small profit to be shared between SRC and the air ambulance charity.
Dressage started at 9am in two arenas this year situated in the large car parking field and there was also a tuition arena this kept all the dressage in one place and the ground was more suited to dressage than last year.

The marquee was also in a different place due to the strong wind on Friday evening it was put in a more sheltered area behind the outdoor school. This was a bit of a hike for those signing in and collecting bibs but was unavoidable.
With the dressage phase underway the show jumping tuition started around 9.45 and the outdoor school opened for business at 10am and a constant stream of riders and their horses/ponies cleared the impressive set of new SRC jumps on the course with the help of the stewards on duty.

At 11am the cross-country course opened. Both the lead rein and the open course were different this year and with the help of 3 sets of course stewards placed around the course in their 4 x 4’s the riders set off. As with the show jumping every obstacle was optional including the water complex but most riders attempted them all.
The first aid team ‘First Line Response’ had a quiet day, which was good news and helped us out with the guy ropes on the marquee that were getting a bit loose!
This year we ran a raffle with prizes donated by the photographer Mike Weeks from DorsetPhotoEvent the on site tack stand Muddy Rugs/Giddy Up Tack and Caboodle unique personalised gifts from the Broadwindsor craft centre. Mick Wallis kept all our helpers supplied with hot drinks and Linda Paget supplied the homemade cakes.

All our helpers lunches were sponsored by local businesses as were the helpers gifts and the riders goody bags – our sponsors names are on the website.
The comments made around the trade stands and the venue in general about the event were all positive as is the feedback received since the event especially how helpful and friendly everyone was. The chaps on the car parking and entrance gate said all those leaving Linnet farm left smiling and happy which is the whole aim of the day and they also managed to go to the aid of one poor driver with a flat tyre which they changed making their onward journey possible.
The ODE team wish to thank all the helpers and officials that were there on the Saturday and Sunday making the whole event possible.
Anyone up for doing it all again next year?!!
Shipton Fun Ride

A little Dorset mizzle wasn’t enough to deter the riders taking part in the Shipton
Fun Ride at Loscombe Farm on May 30, Bank Holiday Monday. The hardy riders- pun intended- completed the route in
good time, most of them tackling the 10 miles. The scenic ride began within sight of Hardy’s Monument and
was largely off-road, passing by interesting ancient monuments such as stone circles. There was even time for some
equestrian socialising over cups of coffee, bacon rolls and brownies. The verdict from the participants? “A
fantastic route!” “What a great venue!” And even “You’ve really looked after us
well!”

Shipton Riding Club AGM
Shipton Riding Club’s AGM was great fun, with prize giving, a raffle, good food, and a
large dose of showbiz glamour!
Held last night (Feb. 21, 2011) at the Red Lion Hotel in Beaminster, the meeting attracted a healthy crowd of
around 50 people who were attentive during the business portion of the evening and enthusiastic with their ideas
for club events later on.

Guest speaker Mandie Fletcher assisted Chairman Linda Paget in handing out the trophies and prizes. Charlie
Bailey and Phillippa Gatehouse picked up their third place for the Junior Dressage team (earned just two days
earlier at Pontispool), while Kimberley Randall took home the Broadwindsor Dressage trophy for accumulating the
most points throughout the season. Jr Points winner was Chloe Aburrow, and the Bertie Bouncer award- given to
the non-member who has given the most help- was handed to Helen Aburrow. Best turned out Rider and Horse went
to Chrissie Brooks and Duke. The final trophy, the Matthew Bailey Cup, was awarded by Mr Paul Bailey to
Dulcie Gatehouse as the junior member most improved during the year.

Chloe Aburrow wins the Jr Points award
Highlight of the evening was a short talk given by Shipton member and TV director Mandie Fletcher. Mandie began
her session by telling us how she had given up horses at 15 for boys, then at 40 gave up boys for horses again.
She also explained that she moved to this area 11 years ago because of the dogs…they weren’t happy
in London! Mandie then continued to tell us about her work, explaining the difference between a director and
producer, and proceeded to tell several amusing anecdotes about her time spent in the profession. Apart from
having to have artistic vision and organisational skills, it rapidly became evident that a director also needs
patience, diplomacy and a sense of humour. Mandie told us several stories about working with such performers as
Wendy Craig and Rik Mayall. Her next project is working with Dawn French (Mandie plans to put her earnings
towards a horse lorry!), and she has done a pilot for a new series about a move to a smallholding in the country.
She said sometimes one of the difficulties connected with her job was obtaining her weekly copy of
Horse and Hound, particularly when working somewhere such as Deptford (and especially when her
assistant asked for Fox and Hounds in the shop). However,
it’s nice to know she stays in touch with the equestrian community even when away from home. We were
delighted that Mandie agreed to speak at our meeting, and it seems she is in good company; she spoke to
Jennifer Saunders just before the AGM…Jennifer was just off to give a talk to Whippet Rescue!

Paul Bailey presents the Matthew Bailey Cup to Dulcie Gatehouse
A lovely selection of cheese, pate and French bread and a chance to socialise rounded off a very pleasant evening.
Chairman Linda Paget thanks Mandie Fletcher for being our guest speaker
JUNIOR TEAM TRAINING DAY
The junior team training day went really well and was supported by 21 juniors which was very encouraging. There were two sessions held from 11am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm although it was getting a bit dark by then so the sessions may have to be moved back an hour in Dec.

The morning rides were taken by Millie Tonks who focused on
showjumping, and we saw some really lovely showjumping, with ponies and riders really focusing. Emma took the
flatwork session. The aim of this session was to provide children with the knowledge of what judges are looking
for in a dressage test:- circle sizes, correct paces and straight lines were discussed and by of the session were
being ridden very accurately.

The atmosphere was relaxed yet focused and really encouraging. All the parents got involved with putting out
jumps, taking photographs and enjoying watching their children. The instructors felt all went well and getting the
teams together and going well would be really successful.
The feed back from the junior members who I spoke to was very positive:-
“she actually made me feel really confident” non member age 9 yrs
“she was the first person who explained it so that I understood” member age 14yrs

The Instructors for the afternoon session were Pip Bailey and Lizzie Dodge. We were thankful we were indoors as
the heavens opened in the afternoon! Parents, siblings and various spectators gathered to watch some very
interesting lessons.
Pips session concentrated on flatwork and correct rider position - there is nothing like some work without
stirrups for encouraging everyone to sit up! Lizzie focused on riding accurate corners and rhythm into fences.
Everyone was jumping different heights and all came away smiling and with a real sense of achievement.

Parents and riders helped to tidy up at the end of the day and a happy time was had by all. I was asked by many people when the next session was, which is always a very positive sign.
At the next training day we aim to swop the am & pm groups so that all 4 instructors will see all of the juniors. We are hoping to have another training day in December and then on to the members only training days from 1st Jan 2011.

We are hoping that between them the instructors will be able to put teams together for various competitions in Area 12 but be assured if juniors would like to compete there will be a place available to represent SRC. At some stage we would hope to have a get together with parents and juniors to go through what is happening in 2011

After attending an Area 12 meeting last week we now have more information on what is happening and although we were not intending to enter qualifiers for Area 12 competitions this year there is a competition running alongside called the Festival of the Horse. There does seem to be a shortage of junior entries in Area 12 so after considering the criteria we have decided that it would be good experience to enter qualifying individuals for this competition if we have the entries. There are different elements being dressage (Prelim 4) and style show jumping. The first rounds will be held locally with the second round being held at Badgeworth on 27th Feb 2011 the third phase is at Aston. This is open to seniors and juniors and the first 5 seniors in each discipline and first 5 juniors in each discipline will go to badgeworth but for more information please contact Linda Paget or keep an eye on the SRC website calendar.

FUN TREC COMPETITION
On Sunday the 24th of October we ran a fun Trec competition at Broadwinsor. Carol (who was the instructor) and
myself went up the previous day in the pouring rain and set out all the obstacles. By the time we had finished we
had established a course that was going to be challenging to both horse and rider ( one of the most difficult to
most riders seem to be how to get back on your horse without a proper mounting block, most riders became quite
inventive using some of the beer barrels that were in the school!)
On the actual day we could not have wished for better weather, the sun stayed out all morning which made the
whole thing more enjoyable. A lot of riders entered not really knowing what to expect, but Carol walked round
each obstacle explaining how to gain maximum points from each one, the idea was to complete each task before
moving on to the next, but always with the option of skipping anything that either the horse or rider didn't want
to do!
I suppose the best way to describe Trec to anyone who has no idea what it involves is that it is a fantastic
way of de sensitising any horse that may have issues with obstacles such as flapping plastic or anything that
they might perceive to be scary when out hacking as most of the challenges are built around that idea.
We are now considering running a Christmas themed Trec in December complete with Christmas trees and decorations
as part of the obstacles so keep an eye on the calendar for the date to be confirmed!!!

Equine Quiz
Seven teams came to the Quiz on 12th August 2010 and we all had a lovely evening.
Each team brought along their own nibbles and drinks and the picture round gave everyone something to puzzle over before the first round of questions. One equine round and one general knowledge round later we stopped for supper. Donna Heys had prepared some sausage rolls, sandwiches and quiche followed by cheesecakes and chocolate gateau. There wasnt much left by the end!
At the end of the break the picture rounds were handed in and it soon became obvious we had a clear leader - The Penny Farthings were quite a team to be reckoned with! But no one was giving up on the First Prize yet and with two rounds left to go there was all to play for.
After the final general knowledge and equine rounds it was the Penny Farthings who had clinched it, going away with a food hamper packed full of goodies. Further down the leader board the scores were much closer together but in the end the aptly named Wooden Spoons fell into last place and each team member left with a wooden spoon!
The final scores were:

The Shipton Riding Club ‘Have a go’ One Day Event was a fantastic success!
A huge variety of people and horses took part and everyone had a great time. There were a few nervous faces starting
off the dressage but with friendly and helpful judges, even those who lost their way finished with smiles on their
faces. A few people started the show jumping stage early leaving the dressage arena over the white boards, then
coming back in to finish the test.

Some were having a go for the very first time and some hadn’t done a dressage test since
‘a long time ago’. Others had brought young horses along to give them a good start at a non-competitive
event and one lady rode her lovely 26 year old coloured horse. From small ponies to hairy cobs, first time riders
to first time horses everyone did their best before breathing a sigh of relief and strolling back to the car park
to get ready for the next phase. The event was so well organised that nobody had to rush and this helped to
maintain a relaxed atmosphere all round.

Nearly everyone had a go at the cross country phase, the majority taking advantage of the
inviting fences and riding the longer route, taking in the water jump. The steep hill in the middle of the cross
country proved tough for some, others flew up the hill but then spooked at the ‘train’ jump at the
top.

People came from all around to have a go at the SRC One Day Event, many events are competitive
with larger fences, so this event appealed to a large number of people who wanted to just come and
‘have a go’ and most of all have fun! Pippin Equestrian won the prize for travelling the furthest
though, bringing nine ponies all the way from Gillingham. Some of these weren’t so familiar with dressage
judges sitting in cars but all flew around the cross county course!

The overwhelming feedback on how friendly and fun this event was led everyone to ask –
are you doing it all again next year?
