New Year's Day Weymouth Beach Ride

Bring your horse for a ride or a play on the beach. Harriet will bring a variety of long ropes for those who want to let their horse investigate the waves online. The more confident can have a lovely canter along the waterline, practice passage in the waves and if we take some cones there might be enough of us to play some gymkhana games!

Book in with Harriet - we will all meet in the Car park by the lake -opp Mc Donalds and ride up King Street together onto the beach.

WARNING: there will town traffic plus walkers and dogs on the beach so please don't come if your horse is likely to be dangerous!

Join Up Clinic with Connie Found

***(POSTPONED DUE TO ICY ROUNDPEN)***

Well known locally for starting young horses and retraining
problem horses, Connie will be teaching people how to "join up" with their horses at her premises near Symondsbury, Bridport.

Each owner will spend about half an hour in the round pen with their horse and, with Connie's guidance, go through the process of "join up". This would be equally appropriate with a young horse or one which has been ridden for years. In either case the relationship will never be the same again. "Join up causes the horse to choose you as his leader. This should help him be in a better place emotionally to learn things - whether that is to go in a trailer or to jump a ditch" says Connie.

PARTICIPANTS: Max 4 horses

DRESSAGE INSTRUCTION WITH GILL LONGHURST

Gill is a very experienced and well respected dressage judge, she has a very approachable and friendly manner so these classes are a fantastic opportunity for everyone, starting with the beginners and progressing to the more experienced rider.
Gill will take you step by step through the test, she will help you understand what the judges are looking for and advise you on how to improve.
At the end of each lesson you can finish by riding the test, after which she will talk you through your score and explain what the comments actually mean.
These classes are not designed to be frightening or stressful, hopefully they will encourage more riders to realise that dressage can be for everyone.
Please note that the places are limited, and as with the other clinics that we’ve recently held they do get booked up quickly, so please phone as early as you can to avoid being disappointed.

From the horse's perspective.
A talk by Anna Bonnage, instructor

Anna will be giving a talk about her three trips to Harry Whitney's ranch in Arizona, America. Anna has spent weeks learning from this remarkable horseman, who is one of the best in the world. Harry's talent lies in his ability to constantly see things from the horses point of view. This talk will apply to all riding disciplines and abilities and give you an insight into the principles and skills behind Harry's teaching. These are some of the categories that will be covered, softness in a horse leading to collection, the horse's thought and his body, opportunities within difficult situations, helping the horse to let go of a thought, motivating a horse to be willingly responsive, putting into practice a feel, and working with horse's that have become shut down or anxious.

Wine, coffee, nibbles and meals are available at the bar on the ground floor - it's a long way back down, so buy something on the way up!

£2 for Shipton Riding Club members and £3 for non members. Please let Harriet know if you are coming.

Bareback Riding

As well as being a joy in itself, riding bareback is a fantastic way to develop your independent seat and will transform your saddled riding. Starting with survival, we will build up your bareback riding with an emphasis on safety and fun. This is a four session course, with homework!

This is suitable for any horse and rider combo in which the horse is reasonably dependable and the rider is agile enough to be able to jump off a kitchen table without hurting themselves. You do not have to be at any particular level – even beginners are welcome. By the end of the four sessions some will be cantering and jumping bareback, others will not, but all should feel safe and confident and have a plan for progression.

Harriet is fully insured as an instructor and mainly uses natural horsemanship methods.

David Stuart - 3 x 1 Day Clinics

Australian Cowboy Horsemanship Tour-stop at Dorset Stately Home

The internationally respected clinician, Dave Stuart, will be teaching horsemanship on October 2,3,4 in the wonderful setting of Parnham House park and outdoor school. Participants and spectators will have a rare opportunity to learn natural horsemanship from a true horseman, with 20 years experience of teaching and demonstrating for: Dubai Royal Family, Burghley Horse Trials, Horse of
the Year Show, Your Horse Live, The British Horse Society, Buckingham Palace and
Equitana Asia Pacific. Dave has worked and trained with the likes of Pat Parelli, Ray Hunt, Mike Bridges, Craig Johnson and Martin Black. He presents some surprising techniques and insights into the psyche of the horse, in his unique relaxed and intimate style.

“We watched Dave Stuart more or less “knitting” a young horse’s front legs into his ropes – not one to try at home! - but amazing how that horse learnt to think right down to his feet in the hands of an expert” says Shipton Riding Club organiser, Susie Girdler, “...once we had seen him work with horses, we had to find a way to bring him to Dorset”

By kind permission of the Treichl family. Profits will support the Dorset Child and Family Counselling Trust, www.dcfct.org

Book now to take part or spectate in any or all of the three days of clinics:

Friday 2 October:  Foal handling and young horse starting

A day in which Dave will work with young horses and their owners – the morning will be foal and young horse handling. In the afternoon he will concentrate on backing unstarted horses, of which at least two will be backed for the first time and have their first and most important ride.

The owners and spectators will learn how to develop the young horses using natural horsemanship methods and principles. Starting with halter-breaking and ground work to build confidence and prepare for riding...   And finally, the steps to take when backing a horse and progressing through the first rides to create a calm, confident and willing young horse.

Most of the time will be spent in the outdoor school though we may venture out into the park if appropriate.

Costs £18 pre-booked spectators £22 on the day; £100 (half day) tuition

Saturday 3 October: One day clinic for those new to Natural Horsemanship

Dave Stuart will work with people on the ground in the morning and ridden in the afternoon, problem solving and developing the horses and the horsemanship. Dave will teach the participants to have more “feel” And to understand the psychology of horses; how to use groundwork to solve problems under saddle; how to desensitise horses when they are spooky. You will find new strategies to build your confidence and your horse’s dependability before you even get into the saddle! The ridden section will concentrate on gaining lightness of response; perfect impulsion; straightness and balance, using jumping to build confidence in both horse and rider. Nobody will be pushed beyond their ability and time will be taken to explain the purpose of each exercise. We will use the open spaces of the park, cross country jumps, water, bridges, trees etc... Spectators should be dressed and willing to walk.

Max 7 students.
Cost £18 pre-booked spectators £22 on the day; £160 (full day) tuition

Sunday 4 October: One day clinic for those already riding within a NH framework
For all those Parelli, Monty, etc students who want to get on and do a bit more. This day is aimed students wishing to advance beyond the early stages of natural horsemanship and will concentrate on improving impulsion, engagement and self carriage in your horse, as well as problem solving.  Dave will include jumping as a way to achieve straightness, engagement and emotional fitness! Again, the morning will be spent mainly on ground work and the afternoon ridden. We will use the open spaces of the park, cross country jumps, water, bridges, trees etc... Spectators should be dressed and willing to walk.

Max 7 students.
Cost £18 pre-booked spectators £22 on the day; £160 (full day) tuition

If you are taking part on Saturday, you will qualify to continue into Sunday as well. Otherwise, you would need to be familiar with working on 22’/45’ lines etc.

N.b. Dave is not prescriptive about riding in bridles or halters, but all participants will need 12’, 22’ or 45’ ropes for the groundwork.
